Colorado
Looking for places to visit in Colorado? Wondering what to do in Colorado? We share our favorites as we travel the country.
Start with one of these.
Mesa Verde National Park includes over 4,500 archeological sites with only 600 of those being the cliff dwellings that the park is famous for. It was very fascinating to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo people, and their homes, and see the changes in their architecture over long periods of time.
We spent the month of March in Durango, CO at Alpen Rose RV Park and boy did we have some fun! We did a little bit of everything. Planning a trip to Durango? Check out this list of things to do.
The Cascade Canyon Express was a five-hour roundtrip steam train ride (two hours up, two hours back, with an hour stop in the middle for lunch).
After Black Canyon, we continued our journey west through Colorado. Our next stop was with Boondockers Welcome hosts in Delta. During our stay, we took a break from always being on the go and it was great!…
Never heard of this place? Neither had I until we went there! It’s not quite as expansive as the Grand Canyon, but still quite impressive since its attributes are steep, tall, and narrow which is a bit of the opposite of GC. We stayed at the south rim campground inside the park…
From Loveland we headed to Elk Creek Campground, which is a part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area and about 15 miles west of Gunnison, CO along US-50. I was nervous about the mountain drive along US 285, but we had no issues on Saturday morning and our comments can be found in Kansas through Colorado route. This stop was to kill a few days until our reservation at Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park, which we were really interested in because it is an International Dark Sky Park (in other words, great stargazing!). I didn’t have many expectations for Elk Creek Campground and sometimes those turn out to be great stops…
For day two of hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park we wanted to check out the popular Bear Lake Corridor Trails. These trails take you around Bear Lake and then up to Nymph Lake, Dream Lake and Emerald Lake. There is also a trail to Alberta Falls. Four lakes and waterfall in this area of the park, no wonder these are the most popular trails! The park gets almost 5 million visitors a year, half of which are in the summer months…
For our first day of hiking at Rocky Mountain National Park, we made the 22 mile drive up through Estes Park (famous for The Stanley Hotel which inspired Steven King for The Shining) and on a few more miles to the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center to get some hiking tips…
Our next stop in Colorado took us to Loveland and the Riverview RV Park. This was our base camp for exploring the Rocky Mountain National Park which was about a 25 mile drive up into the mountains (where it was a lot cooler!)…
Stop three in Colorado took us to Elizabeth, Denver, and Centennial. We stayed at Casey's RV Hideaway in Elizabeth which was about 45 miles southeast of Denver. Nothing really special, and the site was so uneven that Penguin had to take the Fiat for an impromptu trip back to the Walmart we passed on the way to buy some leveling blocks to help the jacks…
Stop two in Colorado took us back to Colorado Springs and another Passport America park, Foot Of The Rockies RV Resort. This RV park up on a hill was close to Garden of the Gods and our spot had a great view to watch the sunset, storm clouds move through and it overlooked Colorado Springs…
We made it to Colorado! Lucky number 13 :) Our first night we stayed in the parking lot of the Bass Pro Shops in Colorado Springs which had great views of the mountains…
Overnight we were surprised to wake up and find a snow storm rolled in and covered the dunes with 2-3” of snow so the entire landscape was now white. We went back and actually hiked the dunes proper from the main Dunes parking lot near the visitor center.
