Utah to San Diego, CA by RV

Our route through Utah took us through all five national parks and then back home to San Diego, CA. What route did we take to avoid the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel?

Utah to San Diego Route

Route Comments:

  • Capitol Reef National Park to Bryce Canyon National Park:

    • Google Maps recommended Browns Ln to get from UT-24 W to UT-62 W

      • We didn’t take Browns Ln instead we continued on UT-24 W to UT-62 W

      • We saw a large motorhome on Browns Ln so we assume there was no issue with this route

    • After Antimony, UT-22 ends and becomes Johns Valley Rd

      • Road is 30 miles long and is a local road and not part of the highway system

      • One bridge with a posted 17 ton weight limit

      • One narrow bridge with no weight limit posted

      • We drove on a Saturday afternoon and five cars came in the opposite direction and there were two travel trailers behind us

      • The last 20 miles of the road was bumpy but overall this road is good

  • Bryce Canyon National Park to Zion National Park:

    • East entrance has the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel

      • Prohibited vehicles: single vehicles over 40 feet long and combined vehicles over 50 feet long

      • We are over 50 feet with our 37’ motorhome plus tow dolly and tow car

    • We took UT-20 to I-15 and entered from the West

Where did we go? What did we do?
