Our month in New Orleans had come to an end and it was time to hit the road. After a month in the city, we were looking forward to some time on the road and in nature. Leg two of our adventure will take us through Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and then on to Kansas to meet up with our friends.

Our first stop was Biloxi, Mississippi. I originally wanted to stay the night in Biloxi so we had more time to explore but everything was so pricey. Instead, we explored for a few hours and then got back on the road headed for a great Passport America deal in Alabama. Driving through Mississippi? Have a few hours? Check out these things in Biloxi: the Visitor Center, Lighthouse, and Beau Rivage Casino. Don’t have time to read this now?

Biloxi Visitor Center

Finding parking for the motorhome can be difficult but luckily we found a spot at the Biloxi Visitor Center. It was a Monday so it wasn’t very busy, and there were a few options. At the Visitor Center, we checked out the exhibits and the theater. We learned a lot about the area and the destruction of the hurricanes that have caused.

I was really shocked to see how high the water rose during Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In the picture below, you can see the high-water mark for Hurricane Camille of 19.5 feet (blue line) above mean sea level and 22 feet for Hurricane Katrina (red line). The black line is the base flood elevation of 20 feet.

Biloxi Lighthouse

From the Visitor Center, it was a very short walk to the Biloxi Lighthouse. This lighthouse “has withstood many storms over the years.” Guided tours were $5/pp and offered daily at 9 am, 9:15 am and 9:30 am. Unfortunately for us, it was too late and no tours were available.

From the Lighthouse we walked along the beach and checked out the Lighthouse Pier. We then continued walking on this great boardwalk to the Beau Rivage Casino. This casino is an MGM property and inside it looks just like a Las Vegas casino. You would never guess that you are in Mississippi and not in Las Vegas. Definitely worth checking out!
