New Orleans Fun Things To Do

Dive Bar

One night we went to a dive bar called Le Bon Temps Roule, which translates to Let The Good Times Roll. When we were at the Louisiana visitor center we picked up a list of 50 free things to do in New Orleans and this bar was listed for free oysters and live music on Fridays. The oysters were good, the drinks were cheap, and the piano player was great. We have loved all of the live music we have found as we have adventured around this town.

Farmers Market

Another day we went sightseeing around Lafayette Square and then headed to the Crescent City Farmers Market. We bought some fresh shrimp and Penguin made gumbo. It was his first time making gumbo and it was delicious! The shrimp was very fresh. There is something very delicious about Gulf Shrimp. Check out their website here to get the farmer’s market details.

French Quarter

Easter Sunday in the French Quarter caught us by surprise. We didn't expect it to be so busy but it was and it was awesome! Multiple parades and lots of people dressed up. I loved all the women dressed up in pretty dresses and hats.

We grabbed coffee and beignets from Cafe Du Monde and then watched the large container ships float down the Mississippi River. We walked by St. Louis Cathedral, grabbed some food from the local store, and hung out in Jackson Square.

Best Po-Boy

One of our big decisions this week has been where and when were we going to get a Po-Boy :) A friend had recommended we try a fried oyster Po-Boy and a roast beef Po-Boy. After a fun Easter day, we were hungry and we happened to be watching the parade right near Verti Marte. This market\deli had good reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor so we decided to give them a try. We had the fried oyster & shrimp combo Po-Boy and a roast beef Po-Boy. Wow!!! They were both really good but the fried oyster & shrimp combo Po-Boy was my favorite.

More Good Eats

Banh Mi Boys for Bahn mi sandwiches, Greg’s red beans and rice with sausage & pork, Cafe Du Monde for obligatory beignets and chicory coffee, chargrilled oysters and shrimp & grits at Apolline, and my own catfish fry with homemade tartar sauce. Near the French Market, we popped into the Pepper Palace for tasting hot sauce, mustards, bbq sauce, salsa, and left sweating. Wednesday night at Lafayette Square was a free live music event with food and drink vendors (jambalaya!) and on the way home, we passed a Halal Guys which Penguin could not resist getting. Late-night frozen ice cream rolls from Freezy Street.
