Arches National Park
Photos and videos of the best sunset hike, Delicate Arch, and best hike to view the most arches, Primitive Trail at Devils Garden. We recommend you hike the loop counter-clockwise to see Private Arch, Dark Angel, Double O Arch, Navajo Arch, Partition Arch, and Landscape Arch.
Archview RV Resort & Campground
It was a nice short drive down the road to Archview RV Resort & Campground in Moab and thanks to Passport America we saved 50% on our stay. We were excited as this RV resort had a pool (and a splash pad) which would be great during the hot afternoons.
Delicate Arch
After we got settled we headed to the pool to cool off and plan our evening at Arches National Park. I knew I wanted to hike Delicate Arch for sunset. Delicate Arch is listed as difficult as the trail climbs 480 feet up a steep slickrock slope and the end of the trail is a narrow rock ledge for 200 yards. There is also no shade on this trail.
We packed a picnic dinner and tons of water and headed in. Our first stop was a quick walk around Balanced Rock. We then continued our drive to The Windows Section where we hiked to North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch. This section of the park is very popular so it was crowded but we were still able to get some good pictures. Next, we hiked up to Double Arch and as I stared up at these arches I was amazed at how large they were. We sat down and took some time to really admire what gravity, erosion and time had created.
The hike to Delicate Arch was difficult and we had to stop multiple times on the steep slope, but it was worth it. Watching the shadows from the sunset move across Delicate Arch was beautiful. This is a popular spot so when we arrived people were lined up to take pictures in front of the arch. Once the sun started setting and the shadows started hitting the Delicate Arch a group of photographers yelled at the people to get away from the arch so they could get a picture without anyone in it. This surprised us and we were even more surprised when everyone listened and no one went up to the arch for any more pictures. In the end, it did make for beautiful pictures with no random people in them, but I was shocked that a group of people would tell others to get out of the way of their picture.
Primitive Trail at Devils Garden
For our second day, I wanted to do a longer hike so we decided on the Primitive Trail at Devils Garden. This trail is also listed as difficult because there are narrow ledges, steep exposures, uneven surfaces, rock scrambling, and route finding. We did lose the trail a few times but noticed early on so we didn’t have to do a lot of backtracking. Once again this challenging hike was worth it. There were very few people on this trail and the scenery was stunning. We hiked the loop counter-clockwise and in our 9.5 miles, we saw: Top Story Window (not on the trail but found when we lost the trail for a little bit), Private Arch, Dark Angel, Double O Arch, Navajo Arch, Partition Arch, and Landscape Arch.
