I wanted to go to Yellowstone to see the wildlife and I ended up being surprised by the hydrothermal features. I knew Old Faithful was at Yellowstone but I had no idea about anything else. Upper Geyser Basin
Did you know that the majority of the world’s active geysers are in the Upper Geyser Basin at Yellowstone? There are only four other locations in the world that have large concentrations of geysers. Those locations include Russia (Kamchatka), Chile, New Zealand, and Iceland.
As we walked around the Upper Geyser Basin trail at Old Faithful I was shocked to see all the different geysers and hot springs. One of the things that really fascinated me was the colors. There were so many vibrant and beautiful colors in and around the thermal features. I learned that the colors are usually formed by thermophiles, heat-loving organisms, such as algae, bacteria, and archaea. I was amazed at how something could thrive in such hot temperatures.
Wildlife at Yellowstone
While at Yellowstone we got to see some of the wildlife too. Even though we had seen bison at Grand Teton I still enjoyed seeing more bison. They are so big! One had been killed one or two days before and when we saw it off in the distance, thanks to the stranger that let us look through his awesome scope, we saw a bald eagle and crows\ravens eating on the carcass. There was something special about seeing that bald eagle so close up.
Riverside Drive
We also saw elk multiple times, at least four, alongside the main roads. The highlight had to be when we were driving on Riverside Drive, which is narrower and off the main road, and this male elk was walking through the trees close to the road. He was beautiful. I highly recommend a drive along Riverside Drive around dinner time.
West Yellowstone RV Park
We stayed at Buffalo Crossing RV Park in West Yellowstone, Montana. This RV park had full hookups but it was expensive. At least we were able to get a Good Sam discount. Next time we visit Yellowstone I want to stay inside the park as the drive back and forth from West Yellowstone was tiring.
