Route 66 to the Grand Canyon

February 21, 2019

We waited out the AZ winter storm in Kingman. Finally, after four nights in Kingman, the weather report and Grand Canyon website reported that the roads were clear so we got up early and hit the road. Getting out of our spot in Kingman was a little tricky as it had rained the entire day before and the dirt road was really muddy.

Once we got through the mud we turned onto Route 66 and we were on our way. The clouds, sun, and mountains were really pretty. I love how clean everything is after the rain. Along the way, we came across the Burma Shave signs. These were a series of rhyming signs with the last sign having the Burma Shave name.

There were a lot of old abandoned buildings along the way and some historic buildings such as the Historic Seligman Sundries. According to the Historic Seligman Sundries website “Seligman is a community that prides itself on staying true to the past and keeping alive the lure of Historic Route 66.” Right is a short video I recorded as we drove through Seligman.

As we started our climb up the mountain there was snow along the side of the road but the roads were clear. It was an easy and beautiful drive into the Grand Canyon. We had timed the weather perfectly. We had finally arrived at the Grand Canyon and I was so excited!!!
